Today on our last day in New Orleans on vacation, I got the distinct honor of breaking my “no play” experiment by playing chess with one of my chess heroes, NM Jude Acers. “The Man in the Red Beret” is famous in New Orleans and known by almost everyone in the U.S. chess scene. I never thought I would ever get the chance to meet him, much less play a game with him, but today my amazing wife Angie was so gracious and generous to give me time to do just that.
You can usually find Jude in his normal spot, just outside The Gazebo Cafe on Decatur Street in the French Quarter. You can find more information about NM Acers on his website: http://www.judeacers.com. Thank you, NM Acers, for a great game and good conversation. (I especially enjoyed hearing his thoughts on Bobby Fischer, whom Jude drew in a game in Baton Rouge in 1964.)
